Press Release: Alertus Technologies to Bring IoT Technology Hub for Safety and Security Industry to Downtown Baltimore

Mass Notification Leader Acquires Iconic 10 N. Charles Street To Develop State-of-the-Art Center For Intelligent Buildings

Beltsville, MD (May 25, 2021) – Alertus Technologies, a leader in emergency mass notification solutions, today announced plans to bring its Beltsville, Maryland corporate headquarters to 10 N. Charles Street in Downtown Baltimore. Alertus acquired the approximately 40,000 square-foot building, former home to the Johns Hopkins University Business School and widely recognized for its ticker facade, to develop its state-of-the-art Alertus Center for Intelligent Buildings.

Alertus’ Center for Intelligent Buildings will feature the industry’s leading systems for security and life-safety, building technologies, and enterprise IT and network communications, all unified by the Alertus Mass Notification and Internet of Things (IoT) platform in a real-life showcase setting. The building will be designed as an immersive destination for safety and business continuity professionals to experience the convergence of smart building technologies, which include mass notification, surveillance, access control, intrusion detection, gunshot detection, fire systems, building controls and sensors, AV, and digital signage — all interconnected for critical incident automation.

“We are proud to continue Alertus’ growth in Maryland and invest in transforming this landmark building into a concept building of the future,” said Jason Volk, CEO of Alertus Technologies. “The new Center for Intelligent Buildings will demonstrate the possibilities for integrating historically disparate systems into a critical incident ecosystem to protect people and assets during an active shooter incident, tornado, and other threats. The innovative facility will serve as both a proving ground and model for professionals seeking to enhance security and IoT applications for campuses, corporate, and industrial spaces by creating the next generation of smart and intelligent buildings. We look forward to sharing the future Center for Intelligent Buildings with the safety and security industry for years to come.” Alertus’ new building, planned to open Winter 2022, will also house technology labs, corporate executive and employee offices, as well as extensive meeting and auditorium space, which will be available for regional and national industry training programs as well as community usage.

Positioned near the inner harbor at the intersection of Charles Street and Fayette Street, the AIA Award-winning 10 N. Charles Street was designed by Ziger/Snead, prominent Baltimore-based architects. Johns Hopkins University constructed the facility in 2001 as a high-tech educational facility, and the Alertus Center for Intelligent Buildings will deliver its next chapter as a technology-driven hub for educating global safety and emergency management professionals.

Founded in 2002 out of the University of Maryland, Alertus engineers innovative emergency communications systems for colleges and universities, K-12 schools, corporations, medical centers, military bases, and government organizations. The Alertus System is trusted worldwide by thousands of organizations to keep their people safe during emergencies, including armed shooter incidents, severe weather-related events, terrorist threats, chemical spills, health outbreaks, and many more.

Alertus is a deeply rooted Maryland-based organization committed to supporting commercial development in the city of Baltimore. “We are excited about the future of Downtown Baltimore, which will offer our regional and national visitors easy accessibility by all modes of transportation and provide our employees with proximity to excellent amenities,” added Volk.
